John -

Excellent checklist and advice for those who have never managed technical people. My background is IT and recently worked for a large insurance company, managing software developers.

At the time, I was the pilot program for identifying what could be outsourced and was responsible for putting the whole program together. I advice people to NOT jump in before they have their documented procedures in place. Documentation and tracking is the key to success.

And never forget that YOU are managing these people who are working for YOU! Technical workers are a lot like artists - consider them as such and you'll know exactly how to manage them.
