How a Miserable 0.15% Response Rate Can Still Put $50 in Your Pocket Today

How many times have you heard that if you get a 1% response rate you’re doing great? I literally see or hear this 2-3 times per day. When people talk about 2-3% response rates, they are very excited. And, they should be.

But, let’s take a step back for a moment. It is critical that you clearly understand what “1% response” rate really means. Please pay attention, especially if you’re buying advertising.

When I use the term response rate, I mean something very specific. It is an idea that gained a lot of traction in the early days of direct mail marketing. It’s a way of quantifying the success (or failure) of a direct mail campaign. However, there are some important nuances to consider. Response rate was meant to be one dimensional: send out postal mail and measure the response to that mail. Often, the physical mail included a questionnaire, so people were literally responding.

So, when internet marketers talk about response rate, most of them are myopic and short sited. They make the same assumptions that the direct mail marketers often made. Although I will say that some savvy direct mail marketers looked at response rate along many dimensions, which is what I’ll explain here.

In the realm of internet marketing, we absolutely must look at many dimensions to get to the core truth of response rates.

The best way to understand response rates in our current world is with an example. This should open your eyes. I’m going to show you just how hard it is to get up to a 1% response rate, the way that most people talk about it nowadays.

What Are You Doing with Article PLR and eBook PLR?

Most readers of IMsimple.com know something about private label rights, also known as PLR. But, although many people understand the basic concept of PLR they don’t actually know how to exploit PLR.

Where’s the cash?

Let’s take an example. It is quite possible that you’re already a member of the Simple PLR Club. If you are, you know that The Rhodes Brothers offer up 3 private label rights reports with sales pages every single month. To get the most value out of these products you need to inject something special. You need to update the reports, and perhaps the sales pages.

Most people don’t make updates. In fact, most people don’t bother to take action with any of their PLR, let alone the (high quality) Simple PLR Club content.

Why don’t people exploit their PLR articles and PLR ebooks? The answer is really very simple. This answer is based directly on feedback from our customers as well as what we’ve seen on internet marketing blogs and forums.

Most internet marketers do not update the PLR articles and PLR ebooks because they think it is hard to re-write PLR. They know that if they don’t re-write, they will suffer:

1. If they try to submit PLR articles to EzineArticles, they are taking a big risk. EzineArticles will ban you if you try to “game” their system. Bad idea if article marketing is part of your marketing.

2. Google will crush you. First, they might kick your site out of their index. It does happen, make no mistake. Google is watching to see if you’re trying to use tired, old PLR articles and PLR ebooks on your site. They will banish you to the supplemental results, or worse.

The ONLY answer is to re-write your PLR. If you’re moaning and complaining about the work, I don’t blame you at all…

Alert: Make More Money From Your Writing

If you’re trying to make more money writing then think about what you’re writing about.

Lesson 1 — The topic you write about matters. For example, articles about Web 2.0 traffic techniques are probably going to sell better to tech web site owners than articles on cleaning carpets. You have to know your market to make more money writing. It’s simple marketing, but many people violate this rule.

Lesson 2 — Writing broadly about a topic is generally less profitable than writing in a narrow niche. Narrow focus also gives you expertise, which means you’re building “moats” around your domain. It’ll be harder for others to claim they are as talented as you are.

Lesson 3 — This is the big one: Copywriting! Many writers should think about copywriting to make money from writing. Rather than churn out topic-based content, consider writing sales-based content (i.e., salescopy). It’s a different skill, but it’s still writing. Think about it.
