I’m just setting the stage for this…

They were all in learning mode. Like little kids in 3rd grade! It was almost funny, except for the very serious focus and ‘heads down’ activities.

They were listening to someone else talk. They were talking notes, they were filling out forms and they were in little groups sharing ideas and experiences. They were planning. They were developing their strategies. Like you. Like me.

As you’d probably expect, a lot of people come to John and I asking us for our help. Now, you should know that I consider myself a helpful person…and that I wish we could help everyone who wants to get out of their job and start a new life.

The problem is that we simply CAN’T help every single person that knocks on our door, even when they try to throw lots of money at us. Most people simply can’t handle being in the Internet Marketing business, and if we help the people that can’t handle the business, then it’s a gigantic waste of time.

Here are some of the most common reasons we reject many prospective students:

1.) Most people don’t have the persistence to make it in Internet Marketing.

Like it or not, Internet Marketing is a “real” business. Sure, you don’t have to report to a boss, but YOU ARE YOUR OWN BOSS. Who should you work harder for than yourself?

I see so many new marketers give up when they don’t start making money in the first 30 days. It takes PERSISTENCE. It’s a real business, but it’s way less risky…you don’t have $1,000s in upfront investment sitting on the line.

Keep your head up and KEEP GOING. Most people can’t do that.

2.) Most people can’t handle rejection and criticism.

When we mentor new clients in our internet marketing mentorship, we often have make a list of significant and immediate changes that need to be made to their websites. This outrages a lot of people who think they “know better” than we do.

In fact, we may tell you to scrap an entire project. It might be your dream project. It might be the one that you’re convinced will make you rich.

Could you handle being told that? Most people can’t.

3.) Most people refuse to think big.

I have a powerful theory: People who are already making decent money online (more than $1,000 per month) can almost ALWAYS expand their business a minimum of 10x, into the $10,000 per month range.

In these situations, the mentored student typically is NOT:

* Exploiting all of the traffic they have
* Exploiting all of the additional marketing opportunities they have
* Focusing all efforts on building the list
* Exploiting existing relationships
* Building future relationships
* Finding new sources of customers

A mentor can often help them bigger, but it often requires the student to step out of their comfort zone and do things “bigger and better.” A lot of them can’t do it.

4.) Most people want a handout.

This is the most frustrating thing to me. We have perfectly good potential mentorship students approach us and then just completely lose the opportunity when they ask us to do everything for them for free.

Yes, believe it or not, we get a lot of “help!” requests from Internet Marketers making over $1,000 per month who aren’t willing to re-invest their profits and want handouts.

Nothing turns us off faster than hearing someone ask us “can you do it for free?”

But it’s NOT for the reason you think – it’s not about the money. It’s because people like that are so uptight they aren’t willing to take risks and make investments to grow their business.

5.) Most people don’t “love” Internet Marketing or their business enough.

It shocks me how many people get lucky in this business. I’ve talked with people who own $1,000+ per month online businesses but don’t really care about the actual marketing. They don’t have the passion or love to grow their business.

Nothing is worse than someone who is just in it for the money. You gotta have that drive to help people and grow your business to a whole new level. The bigger your business, the more people you can help….and THEN the money will come (rushing in at a faster rate than you can process it.)

6.) Most people won’t stick to timelines.

While I often have a lot of lazy days, I’m very strict about meeting my deadlines for projects. When projects aren’t completed on the timelines that we establish, bad things happen:

* Sales slow down
* Traffic slows down
* Lists become stale
* SEO potential decreases
* Customers become bored
* Skills become rusty

You MUST set a schedule for yourself and stick to it. When you have timelines and that “drive” to get things done, money flows to you.

7.) Most people won’t follow instructions.

Argh. This is probably the most frustrating. We get a lot of people that seem to do EVERYTHING else right…but don’t follow our instructions. We tell them exactly what they need to grow their business, and then they decide to either “add their own twist” to our instructions, flat out refuse to follow them, or (in the worst cases) completely disappear.

8.) Most people are too desperate.

Desperate people do crazy things and often make poor decisions. If you’re stuck in a position where your internet marketing business isn’t making any money and your back is against the wall, you’re going to do desperate things.

The problem in Internet Marketing is that you’re going to LOSE a LOT of the time. Your offers and traffic won’t convert and you’ll get nothing. BUt, other times you can have HUGE wins.

If keeping a roof over your head is depending on the success of a product launch, you’re getting into very risky territory. You need a stable income so that you can work without being stressed and feverish.

9.) Most people are too scared.

Whether it’s being scared of success, scared to try new things, scared to think about of the box, scared to take risks or one of the other 1,000 things there are to be “scared” of, most people simply have too much FEAR to make it big in the Internet Marketing business.

10.) Most people won’t systemize their business.

This is BIG. You need to be working ON your business, not IN your business. Remember, you are the mastermind of your own business…you control everything. If you owned a McDonalds, wouldn’t you want to have everything systemized so that other people did all of the hard work for you? After all, the owner shouldn’t be making burgers all day.

One thing we try to do for all of our mentored students is provide a framework for systemizing some of the “basic” stuff in their internet marketing business…content updates, traffic generating articles, videos and websites, customer support, and more. It’s not just about outsourcing…it’s about having a concrete SYSTEM for you and your employees to follow and grow.

So, with all of that said…

Getting an Internet Marketing Mentor is a BAD IDEA if you meet any of the criteria above …we have to flat-out refuse to mentor a LOT of people. It makes me feel guilty (like I’m “playing God” with people’s lives and welfare) but I have to do what is best for everyone.

The number of hostname responses NetCraft.com received were nearly 234 million in December 2009, but sank down to under 207 million in January 2010.

The interesting news about this is that while the number of hostnames continues to fall, the market share for some major web servers substantially rose. For example, Apache gained 3 million hostnames since the previous month’s survey, and Microsoft gained 600,000 hostnames.

While the number of hostnames has sharply fallen, the number of active sites does continue to rise. Remember, just because a domain is registered does NOT mean that it is necessarily an active site.

So, what does this mean for the Internet Marketing industry?

Competition remains strong for live sites and some of the bigger marketers are becoming more and more inaccessable, but the number of domains that are being registered seems to be going down.

So far this year, we’ve made an extra $54,000 directly due to attending a high-end Internet Marketing seminar – the Earn1KaDay IM Summit. (We expect that we’ll make an extra 6 figures by the end of the year.)

The networking was invaluable, of course, but what was really cool were the different ideas that we pulled out of the seminar. All of the speakers were people (including ourselves) who are making a significant amount of money every single month.

This morning I went to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. Of course I only saw the dentist for a few minutes. The rest of my time was spent with Gerry, the hygienist. She’s a great woman and loves to talk.

Before I knew it, we were talking to about the financial crisis and she was asking me how to get through it. I started talking about index funds, balancing your portfolio, regression to the mean, no load mutual funds, FDIC, and more. Then there was a deer-in-headlights look and I felt bad. At that moment I realized that she was very afraid.

Then something amazing happened. She asked if I would look at all her investment portfolio; Gerry was heading to “her guy” later in the day so the documentation was out in her car. She literally ran to her car and grabbed her IRA and investment information for me to look at. (It’s true!)

It’s astounding what people will do during a financial crisis. Fear is a powerful driver. Losing a huge chunk of your retirement in 2-3 days is painful. Fear and pain also drives unusual decisions, like people sharing intimate financial details with each other.

I told you this crisis story because it sets the stage for how I feel about it all. Like many people, I have a balanced portfolio, personal savings accounts, bonds, and more. And, like you, I care about my financial situation and the shocks in the stock market.

But –

I’m not as worried as most people. I’m going to share a secret with you. It’s something that will reward you forever if you really take it to heart and take action.

I’m very calm these days because I know that I can sell. Yes, I’m a salesman. This is very powerful and drives peace and harmony with my personal finances.

If you can sell, you can always survive. If you can sell, you can lose all of your money and still pull down cash and feed your family and pay the mortgage.

“But I don’t like to sell!”

I hear you and I understand. If you don’t like selling, then first I have to say that you probably don’t understand selling. It’s not as dirty as you might think. Selling, when done right, is simply giving people what they want for a fair price. It’s as easy as a conversation. (It’s true.)

But there’s another piece of this secret. The second part of my advice is that you need to start your own business. If you run your own business then you can survive any financial turmoil as long as all your money isn’t tied up in the stock market. It shouldn’t be!

When you own your own business you are completely in control. You can’t control the market or your customers, but you can survive dark times. In fact, when things are grim you are best positioned to strike out on your own. That point is worthy of it’s own blog posting but it’s true. You can take that to the bank.

So, in short, if you want to make it through tough financial times then you need to sell. You need to embrace the power of marketing. If you don’t know how, start learning today. Secondly, start your own business and focus on sales. Be sure that those sales translate to profits, not just pure revenue. Make money and grow.

The punch line is that to be successful you need to focus.

The problem with saying “You must focus!” is that I don’t qualify it at all. In other words, I don’t fully dig into why focusing drives profits. I kind of just say “Focus!” and expect you to believe that it works miracles.

I don’t like to make claims without proof or some sort of evidence. I like to back up what I say. So, in this blog entry I’m going to give you five good reasons to focus.

Before I do that, it’s important to absorb the core idea behind the 10x Method, so don’t miss that video. It’s also important for you to know that when I say “Focus!” I’m also talking about specialization. You can definitely hop from one great new idea to the next, but once you strike gold you need to focus. That focus is specialization.

Note: Dennis Becker’s success comes almost entire from focus and specialization (See: Earn $5 Per Day). Yes, I’m an affiliate but that’s because Dennis is a great guy with a great product.

The 5 Reasons Why Focus Drives Profits

1. You have superior knowledge of customer’s needs. Therefore, you’ll have an easier time creating targeted products. Pricing will be much easier to figure out too. When you have great products at the right price, your profits will go up. Focusing and specialization give you this ability.

2. Focusing also allows you to build a reputation in a segment or field. Gurus are know for 1-2 products, usually. They are great at product launches, or traffic, or Adwords, or something else. It’s usually the case that the “winner takes it all” in these segements. At a minimum, disproportionate profits are delivered to just a few people.

3. When you specialize and stay narrow, it’s much easier to re-use and leverage existing customer lists, business assets, and related assets. Also, it’s far easier to refurbish an old product than it is to create a new one. It’s faster, easier, so you pull more profit. Beautiful, right?

4. Quality should be higher because you more directly meets customer needs. You’re likewise a known quantity for getting people to buy is so much easier. (Think about how much easier it is to sell to people on a buyer’s list. They know you; they trust you.) Furthermore, there’s reduced cycle time because of familiarity with the customers and the niche market. Focus gives you efficiency and speed, and speed means profit.

5. It’s easier to sell add-ons if you continue to focus. Real world example: If you have a savings account at one bank, it’s easier for the bank to sell you on a checking account. You have same advantage. If you have a buyer’s list you can make money faster. Furthermore, by focusing, you have the ability to sell adds-ons because you actually have those products to sell. If you keep creating Adwords products to sell, for example, you can more easily upsell and downsell.

These five reasons drive windfall profits online. Yes, you can float around from one idea to the next. However, you will eventually find something that works and you’ll get serious. You will make *some* money one way or another. Many business models work.

Once you see cash, then unleash the true power of the 10x Method. That’s when you focus, focus, focus.

CURIOUS ANIMALS

Humans like to try new things. We all like new experiences. The problem is that if you float from one thing to the next you can’t make money online, let alone build a business. It’s the focus and dedication that make it all work.

But there is a solution…

If you’re anything like me you keep doing things that are rewarding. This is how humans operate. When we’re rewarded we just keep pushing forward.

You can use this to your advantage to make money and start your online business. It works like this –

1. Find something that works; get some cash flowing
2. Do that “something” again and again

Now, if you can’t find something that works then here’s my advice: Move on! Most people will tell you to “keep working at it!” but I’m telling you the opposite. GIVE UP!

Feels good to give up, doesn’t it. That’s because the monkey is off your back. You’re free!

KNOW WHEN TO QUIT

To succeed you must know when you’ve failed. But, one failure is trivial. It means nothing. All you need to do is follow your instincts. Quit and float around more. Flutter around like a little butterfly in the wind.

When you land, give that new “something” a try. If you don’t make money and you’re not happy: GIVE UP!

However — this is important! — if you do succeed, then keep focused. If you pull down any cash, just keep going. If not, acknowledge that you lost one battle but that there are many others to fight.

Fortunately, this is much easier than it sounds. You won’t be tempted to keep floating around because the cash is flowing. You’re rewarded. Maybe you found a great affiliate program. Maybe you’re now freelancing. Maybe you’re great at selling PLR products.

It doesn’t matter what works for “them” — what matters is what works for you. Float, float, float. When you finally find the right thing, then focus. And, be richly rewarded. Be happy because you’ve found your way home.
