The big problem is that a lot of folks don’t use blogs properly. There was a time where you could have thrown up a simple Blogger blog, write a couple short articles, put up some Google AdSense ads, attract some web traffic, and then watch the money roll in.

That doesn’t work any longer.

Sure, you might make enough to pay for a few beers, but it’s not going to put a roof over your head. The good news is that blogs are still extremely lucrative and can put thousands of dollars into your pocket every single month – if you know what you’re doing.

The premier blogging tool, hands down, is Wordpress. It’s free, works well, and is easy to use. The only requirement is that you have a hosting account such as BlueHost (who we use to host our websites and recommended) to host your website. In your hosting account control panel, you can automatically install Wordpress on your website in less than a minute by using Fantastico or Simple Scripts.

However, the key to making real money with blogs is to get creative. Yes, it’s a huge cliché…but you have to think out of the box. That’s why I use these 6 simple profit machines to maximize my income potential with Wordpress…feel free to steal them and build your own blogging empire:

Profit Machine #1: Authority Sites

Setting up simple Niche Authority Sites is one of the easiest ways to start making a profit online, but it’s also the most time consuming. I wrote out an extensive step-by-step guide to building your first simple blog in a post I made over a year ago: Make Money Online – Step-By-Step Method

Note: If you have no money to your name, you can use a Blogger blog to build your first authority site (as I recommend in the above guide), but I do recommend upgrading to Wordpress as soon as possible. It is far more customizable and offers you more opportunity to expand. Wordpress also provides a free blogs via their website, but you want the self-hosted option so you can upload your own themes and plugins.

It takes serious commitment to start one of these and stick to it – and you won’t see any immediate returns. However, if you post daily for 2 to 3 months, have a professional design and monetize it properly, you’ll be light years ahead of competing websites and you will able to pull in at least a few hundred dollars per month.

The real trick to becoming an authority site (rather than a boring “blog”) is to either position your company, your brand or yourself as an expert. This is a big stumbling block for a lot of people – most feel like they’re not an expert in any particular area. That’s simply not true. When I asked my Dad if he was an expert in anything, he said no…but that’s definitely not the case. He’s a perfect example…

My Dad spent 30+ years as a police officer and learned some extremely valuable skills that you wouldn’t expect. One of them was the ability to write grants that generated millions of dollars for equipment and additional personnel for his department. His success rate was incredibly high – over 90% of the grants he submitted were approved. That’s unheard of and it’s a skill that companies, organizations and individuals would pay thousands of dollars to learn. Starting an authority site about grants would be perfect for him.

You really need to think about your experiences and your interests. Even if you truly don’t feel like an expert on a topic, you can do research to become one. Spend an afternoon learning the basic “rules” of your niche and you’ll know more than 80%+ of the population, and that qualifies you as an expert.

Once you’ve established a topic for your authority site, spend some time doing research on the types of phrases people are searching for using a free tool such as Google’s Keyword Tool or a premium tool such as Micro Niche Finder. (MNF is highly recommended – it makes it very easy for you to find profitable long-tail keywords and to quickly assess your competition.)

Once you’ve found several keyword phrases that people are searching for, you focus your site’s content around those keywords and post to it daily. You build momentum for your new website by talking about your authority site on other blogs and niche forums, then offer to be a guest blogger for other popular blogs.

The potential with an authority blog alone is extremely high. It’s a very flexible model that can be expanded almost indefinitely, but it’s just one way to make money with blogs. Here’s a method that’s a little less conventional…

Profit Machine #2: Niche Storefronts

A lot of people don’t know that you can actually setup an entire online store using Wordpress. Whether you want to sell items directly from your blog, or appear as a third-party store and simply refer customers to Amazon as an affiliate, Wordpress can help you establish these profit machines easily.

There are a couple of different ways you can do it…

a.) You can download a theme that converts your blog into a storefront. Some of these themes are fairly advanced and require a fee to download, but you may be able to find some for free. Once you have your website established, you can use Paypal to accept payments. Some of the more advanced themes even have an “Add to Cart” feature built in.

b.) You can download a plugin that automatically pulls in products from websites such as Amazon or eBay. These plugins can automatically include a picture and short description from those sites, integrated with your affiliate link. There are free and premium options for these types of plugins, but the premium options typically provide more options and flexibility.

If you decide to establish a store, you will want to make sure that you add some unique content (as the content you add will be from Amazon or eBay and won’t boost your search engine rankings) and also implement a professional design. This is effectively a type of authority site, but you will providing direct links to products or services rather than information. It’s harder to get traffic to these types of sites, but the quality of customers is often higher as they’re looking to buy a particular type of product.

Profit Machine #3: Membership Sites

Membership sites are a tried-and-true method for generating long-term cash. There’s so much to say about memberships that we created an entire course called Membership Blueprints. With that said, using Wordpress to power and protect a membership site is a very smart way to go.

In fact, we use Wordpress for our Simple Cash Blog Membership, our most popular resource. It’s extremely easy for anyone to do. First, install Wordpress in the location you want your member’s area. For example, you’ll want to install Wordpress in a location such as: http://yourdomain.com/members/

After you’ve installed it, you simply need to password protect either individual posts or the entire member’s area. For the Simple Cash Blog, we password protected the entire member’s directory in under 2 minutes using a tool called the Instant Membership Site Creator, which we sell for less than $20. If you want to password protect individual posts or provide different levels of access, you can use a plugin such as s2Member.

The best part about using Wordpress for a membership site is that you can actually create content for the membership site in advance and schedule it to be posted at a future date. Your membership site could have a full year’s worth of content in queue without you ever having to touch it. (Of course, this might not be possible depending on the type of membership or the support you need to provide.)

The toughest part of the membership creation process is that you need to write an extremely powerful sales letter and provide “addictive” videos, articles and resources to your members. It’s significantly harder to get someone to subscribe to a $99 per month membership than to purchase a $99 product. Plus, if your content isn’t compelling enough, people will drop out. It happens all the time and some folks will even drop out immediately after joining.

The key for the membership site model is to provide an ongoing service or educational material to a very specific market, and to expose your membership to as many of those people as possible by partnering with others, advertising, article marketing and more.

Profit Machine #4: Local Businesses

This is a rapidly growing opportunity that nearly every internet marketer can take advantage of. Most small, local businesses do not have a website, but most are rapidly realizing that they need to have one. It adds an immense amount of professionalism to a business if they have a well-designed website, and younger generations use internet search as their first resource to find out reviews or more information about a business.

As a 23 year old living in Toronto, I can tell you that I have only tried out new restaurants if I was able to read their menu online. There is a fantastic fish and chips restaurant 5 minutes down the road that I would have never found if they did not have a website. The website wasn’t even that fancy – it was simply professional enough that it gave me confidence that it was a good business.

The potential here is HUGE. There are a nearly endless list of services you can provide to offline businesses…

* Setup their site using Wordpress, then design it using a related theme (there are a lot of great themes available for restaurants, professional firms, and much more.)

* Charge a yearly fee to host their domain and website for them

* Sell them on Search Engine Optimization services – it’s extremely easy to rank for search terms in small towns

* Charge a monthly fee to update their website for them as needed – news, updates, new products or services and more.

* Charge firms to update their website design or ways to make money directly from their website

* Charge businesses for the ability to sell products directly via their site or to accept online ordering

That’s really just the tip of the iceberg. It’s easy to sell these types of services to small businesses. Provide a guarantee and legitimate recommendations to improve their business and you’ll be able to find a lot of customers who are willing to pay for monthly services.

Wordpress is an extremely powerful tool, but you have to remember that it’s only a tool – you need to think out of the box and apply the techniques above to create a profitable website that produces residual income for months and years to come.

The answer is simple. You can get a ton of FREE TRAFFIC.

Here’s how to get all the free traffic you can handle… and how you can finally become a guest blogging freak. I’m going to spill the beans for you.

First, let’s set the record straight…

I’m tired of people saying that they can’t get a ton of free traffic. They say “there’s no free traffic” out there. Well, that’s wrong. All you have to do is be cool and ask for it.

I use many different traffic-getting secrets. But in this blog post we’re going to look at guest blogging because it’s so easy a hamster can do it.

YOU CAN DO THIS…

First, you’ve gotta find blogs in your niche. Let’s say you’re into fire-eating. That’s your thing. What you do is hunt down blogs about fire-eating and you’re 80% of the way to getting free traffic.

The reason is that you’ve taken some action. Most people — not you! — are totally lazy and won’t even do a little work to find some blogs.

It ain’t that hard to go to Google or Google Blog Search to find blogs in your niche. But like I said, 80% of the people reading this won’t even do that.

OK, so now that you’ve found these blogs, you just contact the blog owners and say this to them:

“I’M WILLING TO WRITE FOR FREE!”

Well, maybe not exactly like that but you get what I’m saying…

Most folks are tired, lazy and have no time. If you tell them that you will do work for FREE they will be happy to listen to you. Listen, if I came to YOU and said…

“I’M WILLING TO WRITE FOR FREE!”

…for YOU, wouldn’t you be a little bit interested? Sure you would!

Who doesn’t want FREE stuff, especially free content from someone else. And, imagine if you said that your content was 100% unique — never published any other place.

So, when you do this, the other person is listening and there’s a good chance that no one else has ever offered to do FREE WORK for them. That alone is very special.

Now imagine that the only thing you ask for is a little author box or bio box at the end of the article. This is just like you’d do on a site like EzineArticles — diggin’ me?

There are two things that happen here. You gotta pay attention to this…

1. You’re getting direct traffic from that blog to your site. People will click the link in your bio box and come to your site. Sweet!

2. Here’s a ninja secret: you’ll also get a BACKLINK from that blog. Just imagine getting a fresh-n-hot backlink from a high PageRank blog. Heck, even a low PageRank blog is good. That backlink will be noticed by Big Brother Google and boost the juice of YOUR SITE. That means traffic… from Google!

This is like article marketing on El Crackola. And, you get DIVERSITY in your backlinnks doing this.

But wait, there’s more –

Seriously…

You are also establishing a relationship with the blog owner. If they are smart they are building a list. In fact, if they are smart… they already HAVE a list. If that’s the case… and YOU have been nice to them, and you’ve built a relationship…

That’s got huge potential for a JOINT VENTURE.

That’s a fancy way of saying that you can work with your new friend — maybe they will mail to their list saying that you’re awesome. You sell some stuff. You get traffic, make money. You and your new friend split the money 50/50 and EVERYONE WINS.

For the last 18 months, I’ve gone absolutely crazy with outsourcing. I make a huge investment in outsourcing every single month. If you’re serious about your online business, you must do the same.

Let’s jump into my 12 outsourcing tips:

First, you need to first filter people based on quality. There are many people available at many price points but quality can be harder to find. So, seek out people with strong skills and then start filtering on price. You can always negotiate prices lower by putting people in competition with each other. And, you can drive prices down by letting them know that you expect a quantity discount. Buy in bulk.

Second, you need to use outsourcing to augment your strengths. Just because you are good at something, don’t think you’re absolutely on top of your game. It never hurts to get outside advice. A good example is this: Get someone else to do tedious research on a topic, then use that report to clarify your ideas and your thinking. This is pure magic.

Third, seek to eliminate or reduce redundant tasks. Have someone else handle the routine tasks, even if you like those tasks. A good example is posting blog entries. There’s no reason you need to be in the blog updating business. Sure, you might write the content, but have someone else find a good image, develop the tags, choose the title, select the category and so on. For a few bucks you can get some real talent to handle this routine task.

Fourth, you really need a good project tracking system or the management of your workers will become your new job. Do you really want to spend hours and hours being a manager? Do yourself a favor and find smart ways to handle outsourced work and outsourced workers. Have smart systems in place. Get daily updates and ask for exception reports. Make it simple. Make it clean. But, don’t think for a minute these folks will manage themselves. Find a way to stay on top… with minimal effort.

Fifth, you should seek to build longer term relationships with workers. The cost of training is very high, both in terms of money and time. Especially time! So, try to find quality workers right out of the gate. This will absolutely drive higher quality. Also, as time goes on, you’ll become a top customer. That means better pricing, faster response time and higher quality from the same workers.

Sixth, always seek out people who pay attention to the details. I learned this one the hard way. I thought I should get more people who balanced operations and strategy. However, I operate quite differently now. You need to find people who are great at operations and execution. You want people who are detail oriented or downright anal about their work. I’d rather have someone obsess over quality and deadlines than coming up with the next big idea or fancy pants strategy. I can do that well enough, thank you very much.

Seventh, you must manage the basics first: requirements, ownership, timeframe, expectations. Don’t try to manage entire systems and don’t try to manage a vision, at least not a first. Instead, stick to the essentials and getting the job done. Manage outputs and delivery. Manage deliverables first and then time. This will keep your project on track at a reasonable cost. The greater you can focus on the details for your workers when they start, the great your return on investment and profits. Trust me on this.

Eighth, be prepared to do more work in the short term. This is because you will want to invest in training. If you think you can simply hand over work without some hand holding, you will be frustrated. You might even fail. Either way, without an upfront investment in time and energy, you want maximize your outsourcing opportunities. If you do this right, you’ll be extremely happy in the long run. I’ve learned this the hard way… but now I’m happy as a clam!

Ninth, you should always provide concrete, actionable advice. Don’t be vague. Don’t expect other people to read your mind. This is especially true if you’re only using email to communicate with your outsourcing team. If they can’t see you and hear you, they simply will not understand the nuances and ultra small details that really matter to you. So, buckle down and get as specific as possible, unless you’re willing to iterate several times. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for rework. If you’re not at least 90% happy, then ask for more work to be done. Ask for higher quality. But, be sure to be concrete.

Tenth, don’t throw “it” over the wall and expect miracles. In terms of an operational mode, it is smart to plan for several iterations and cycles. Instead of giving one date for a final product, ask for 2-3 checkpoints or updates along the way. Do this even with small projects that just take a few days. Ask for daily updates. Important: Ask to literally see the work. Get screenshots, samples and other tangibles. This will drive your team to deliver on time but it also gives you peace of mind and more material to manage them. Do this to work with your team vs. trying to just manage their outputs.

Eleventh, develop systems and templates and examples. If you don’t have these materials, it’s time to get to work. You want to have tools and processes in place for others to use and exploit. Rather than trying to explain what you want done, set up a mini “factory” that allows your team to crank out high quality without a ton of thinking. You want to focus on work and execution, not puzzle solving and mind reading. Be smart about developing those systems and you’ll make a killing. This is golden advice.

Lastly, I strongly encourage you to ask your workers for advice on increasing efficiency. Since they are doing tasks over and over again, they will develop shortcuts. It’s human nature. Listen to your team and they will help you drive up profits. They will become more “invested” in you and your business. Plus, if they create a breakthrough, you can move them to a zone of higher profit. That is, for the same amount of effort, they can help you make more money!

Here’s a nice summary of my points above. This is your cheat sheet. It’s your checklist…

1. Go for quality first and price second. I’m talking about filtering people.
2. Seek to augment your strengths (e.g., research to feed your thinking)
3. Seek to get rid of your redundant tasks (e.g., posting content to your blog)
4. You need a good tracking system or management of workers is your new job
5. Seek to build longer term relationships; higher quality and preference
6. Always seek out people who pay attention to the details; operations vs. strategy
7. Manage the basics first: requirements, ownership, timeframe, expectations
8. Be prepared to do more work in the short term; invest in training
9. Always provide concrete, actionable advice; don’t be afraid to ask for rework
10. Don’t throw it over the wall; iterations and cycles; work with your team
11. If you don’t have systems and templates and examples, get to work
12. Always, always, always ask your workers for advice on increasing efficiency

I’m just setting the stage for this…

I have a very nice home office. It’s large and overly comfortable. I have monster-sized windows with a great view overlooking a lush green valley — at least until the snow flies. I appreciate that it’s a killer office. It was a great investment and I have to tell you that I just love it.

My brother and I were sitting in my office just a few days ago. We started talking about launching new products in new markets. We were specifically talking about giving the right people the right stuff at the right time.

We know that marketing — particularly selling — is the alignment of wants and needs to appropriate solutions. Burn that word into you mind: alignment. We know that some people would rather use the word congruence than alignment. But alignment is easier to grasp. Congruence tends to imply agreement whereas alignment is more about matching. It’s that alignment, or matching, that I want to talk about right now.

People tend to say “desperate buyers” and “hungry markets” at the same time, as if they are the same thing. The reality is that they are not the same. In fact, there are two fundamental differences that you absolutely must understand.

Desperate buyers have an immediate need. These buyers are trying to get answers right now to solve a problem that is causing them great pain. Desperate buyers will usually reach a breaking point, or they have a deadline to meet. I’ll talk more about this in a minute.

Buyers in a hungry market, on the other hand, have an immediate need plus future needs to satisfy. People in a hungry market can often delay gratification or push off pain in the short term but the wants and needs do not go away. The itch doesn’t go away.

It might sound like I am “splitting hairs” and I know that desperate buyers sound very much like people in a hungry market. In fact, some desperate buyers are just part of a hungry market — that’s true. But, there are differences that can have a profound impact on your business.

The best way to understand the difference is to provide examples. When someone is going through a divorce they are usually desperate. They are consumed by this life event and they will drink down as much information as possible. They will do anything to reduce the pain and understand how to get the problem solved. However, this pain will eventually go away — the divorce will eventually occur.

On the other hand, investors are constantly looking for new and better information; they’re hungry. They aren’t truly desperate but they always want more. Like desperate buyers, they have an itch to scratch. But, that itch never goes away and they will seek new information constantly in an effort to get the upper hand, or otherwise get an “unfair” advantage.

So, desperate buyers tend to be a bit more focused. They also tend to think more in the short term. People in a hungry market are a bit less focused (because they are less desperate) and they think and act in relation to the long term. I realize this isn’t 100% accurate but it’s mighty close.

This information is very useful. In fact, it could mean the difference between wild profitability and making $12 a month. Here’s why…

You can target desperate buyers with products and services that provide immediate benefit. Your language and your tone will help you make more money. You can more easily get into their mindset and walk in their shoes once you realize just how badly they need what you have.

If that doesn’t quite make sense, consider the following. Desperate buyers aren’t really well suited for memberships. They are looking for an immediate, short term solution.

Of course this also means that memberships are best suited for hungry markets because they want constantly updated information. In reference to my example above, you’d probably want to sell a report about getting through a divorce whereas you could set up an investment membership or newsletter. Now you know why this makes so much sense. It’s not random.

It’s this kind of thinking — and alignment – that will best satisfy your customers. This is also a good way to start thinking about your sales funnels. Desperate buyers require short sales cycles and quick, punchy results. On the other hand, in a hugnry market you can stretch out the marketing funnel and do more pre-sales. I guarantee that this kind of thoughtful alignment will put more money in your pocket.

It just doesn’t work that way.

But, you CAN make money online now and build a long-term business at the same time, if you’re smart about it and you have the right skillset. First, we need to figure out what kind of marketable skills you have. Here are some ideas…

1.) Do you have a knack for programming? You can go to eLance or Guru.com and find jobs appropriate for you.

2.) Are you a graphics designer? Start advertising your services using Google Adwords and the Warrior Forum. People need new graphics all the time.

3.) Can you write well? With just a little bit of practice and experience, you can charge $10 to $20 for a 400 to 500 word article. Start off by pricing your articles low, and then move up the chain as you get more and more testimonials and experience.

4.) Do you have a lot of connections to “important people?” Find people who are having problems or need a service, and then connect them to the people you know. Charge a royalty!

5.) Do you know how to build websites? Build websites for local businesses, or even setup simple blogs using Blogger.

6.) Does a local business need help moving inventory? Become a salesperson and sell it on eBay for them. (Become a consignment expert!)

One of the best ways to make money online and drive traffic is to enlist the help of affiliate marketers. Internet marketing affiliate programs can lead to incredible traffic if you offer 100% commissions on big ticket products and services, which is exactly what we do with the 10x Method affiliate program. Let’s change gears now and talk about generating traffic to your niche web sites and blogs. What I’m going to cover is simple but effective. Don’t be fooled by how easy these things are to do.

If you look above, you will see that I talk about Kevin Riley for an entire paragraph (lucky guy). I’m doing that because now Kevin might link to me or help me. I would never demand traffic or links from Kevin, but I will ask very nicely. I’ll send him a note or I’ll send him a direct message on Twitter. (Hey, are you Following me on Twitter?) If I’m lucky, I’ll get some link love which translates to short and long term traffic.

Another thing you can do to easily drive traffic is build relationships with others via JVs and giveaways. Here’s an example. I did 90% of the work on the Simple Giveaway. I bought the domain, set up the page, and emailed everyone about everything. I coordinated the launch and I made it easy for my partners to do business with me. I was rewarded with tons of traffic and hundreds of sign ups to Free Business Model.

How else can you help others help you? Well, if you have a blog, do you have web 2.0 social bookmarking widgets installed? (Hint: I like Sociable.) At the bottom of this blog posting there are several buttons you can click to Digg, Stumble and otherwise bookmark this posting. (Please take action. Click-n-save!)

The last thing I’ll talk about is back scratching, both formal and informal. I’ll also talk about helping people ahead of time.

So, what’s formal back scratching? The idea is simple. You work within a membership or system with a group of other like-minded people. For example, maybe you work with the Rhodes Brothers via our coaching program. You can also find that kind of support inside Traffic Drill, which is dedicated to driving traffic to your web site. Plainly speaking, the idea is that you pay a small fee to help other people and have them help you. It’s simple but deadly effective.

Now, how about informal back scratching? The concept is straightforward. You would go out of your way to help other people via social web sites like Twitter. For example, just today I asked about 7-8 trusted Twitter colleagues to take a look at a new blog entry I wrote in a special niche. If they like the page and it’s valuable, they will likely Stumble or Digg that page. If it’s not good, they’ll give me feedback so I can improve it. Importantly, I make it easy to Stumble and Digg, but also provide me with feedback via Twitter. That’s key.

What works better, formal back scratching or informal back scratching? Honestly, they both work well. However, if you’re looking for guaranteed help or traffic, then services like Traffic Drill are your best bet.

What I want you to understand is that you will build up goodwill and karma over time if you know how to make it easy for other people to make money. Think about it. So, what is interest? What does it mean from a marketing point of view? I’ll answer those questions but first let me make an important point.

In reference to A.I.D.A. please remember that “interest” comes after attention. I will assume that we’ve already grabbed the attention of our reader or customer.

Recall that grabbing attention is critical but attention is easily broken. People don’t focus very well. Even small distractions break attention. To make matters worse, if you try too hard to grab someone’s attention you will turn them off.

In the previous posting on attention I provided you with some power words. Well, if you try too hard you’ll lose people quickly. It’s that simple. You have to strike a balance.

So, “interest” in A.I.D.A. is really about holding interesting or holding someone’s attention. It’s isn’t the initial act of capturing someone with sexy images and power words. That’s already done. You need to know how to keep people interested.

Let’s explore that for a moment. If you want to keep people interested you need to give them a good reason to stick with you and stay focused. You also need to occasionally boost their attention. This is why subheadlines work so well — you’re giving someone reasons to stick with you as they read down a page. Makes sense, right?

There are other tricks to hold attention. For example, you can use psychological devices. That is, you can get the person invested in the page in several ways. You can use their name (if you have it). You can also add mini-surveys to a page, with radio buttons and checkboxes.

Think of attention this way. If you can get the person to interact with your web page, chances of keeping their attention is much higher. Don’t just hit people with images and great information — get them engaged.

This excitement drives interest. It can also boost attention if it’s starting to fade. But remember, don’t bombard a person with great stuff. Mix it up with boring but high value content, such as charts, images, statistics, and the like. Give people shortcuts along the way.

So, I’ve summarized the key ideas behind “interest” in the A.I.D.A. model. You should understand what it means but you should also feel pretty good about some of the new techniques you can use to improve your salescopy.

PDF rebranding is used by internet marketers to create viral marketing campaigns. The central idea is that someone gives away (or sells) a rebrandable PDF report which can be updated or “tagged” with an affiliate ID. Then, that rebranded report is given away or sold in an attempt to get affiliate sales.

Why Does This Work?

The product owner wins by getting people very excited by the opportunity to give away a product and make sales. The product owner will have his rebranded reports all over the place, all with links back to his main product page or membership site.

The affiliate giving away the rebranded report wins because he’s got a very nice sales tool (free rebranded report). This makes his life much easier. He just hands out the rebranded PDF like candy to his blog readers and folks on his list.

In this way, the product owner and affiliate work together to make the product go viral. That simply means that the PDFs will start showing up all over the place. Of course this doesn’t always happen since the PDFs might be buried or hidden, with people only coming from links in mailing lists.
