The meta tag description is something that most people ignore when they are building web pages.

I’m not really sure why but most HTML description tags are weak. Below are some guesses why people don’t care.

First, some people just don’t understand the meta tag description tag. If you don’t understand something you don’t use it. Second, people assume that the tag is handled automagically by the blogging tool or content management system that they are using every day. Third, people don’t understand the benefits of a well-built description tag.

In this blog entry I’m going to explain some reasons why you want to spend some time crafting excellent meta tag descriptions. A big hint is that a good description tag can drastically increase your changes of search engine success.

There are many other meta tag description articles available. However, most of them ignore the two big tips I’m going to reveal right now.

The first meta tag secret is that you can do easy competitive research just by searching and reading through the search engine result pages (SERPs). You can see the sites, URLs, and descriptions for free. This is the magic I want to make sure you understand.

The descriptions you see on the SERPs are what the highest ranked sites are using to get Google love. It’s incredibly easy to use the words and phrases you see on the search results page. Those descriptions come directly from the HTML description tag. With this information you can easily craft incredible HTML description tags too.

But there’s more to this. The descriptions you see also give you a good idea about what keywords might be valuable and worth your research. To be very specific, you can find related words to your “core” keywords. These related words can also funnel into your latent semantic indexing plan. This is a $1,000 SEO tip that I have only shared a few times.

There’s another subtle reason why you want to have a well-crafted meta tag description. When people search for something using a keyword and they find your site on the SERPs, they will use that description to understand your site. It’s a branding thing.

Furthermore, many people first get “caught” by your title but then they read your description to make the final choice to click. Of course not all people are like this — but our research indicates that many people do behave this way. So, you want good usability of your HTML description tag.

The bottom line is that you can significantly increase your organic web traffic with smart HTML description tags. They aren’t a “magic cure” or “silver bullet” for SEO but they can give you a special edge.

Smart internet marketers are always looking for reseller opportunities. I’ll talk about a very special opportunity from the Rhodes Brothers, but first I want to help you understand how these things work.

Being a part of a reseller program is a lot like being part of an an internet marketing affiliate program, but there are some very important differences.

As an affiliate you don’t have the level of control you have as a reseller. You also don’t have as good a rapport with the people behind the scenes. But the biggest difference is that affiliates only get a cut of the profits whereas resellers can make 100% of the money.

(Note: 10x Method affiliates make 100% but that is very unusual.)

Affiliates don’t usually pay anything. An affiliate just hands out their link to people and they hope for a sale. In contrast, the best reseller programs hand over more of the profit to their partners. They make their money by asking for a flat fee for the right to sell.

Let’s take an example of an affiliate program and a reseller program. Pretend the product cost to end customers is $20. An affiliate might be able to make 50% of the sale, or $10. If there is a sale, they make that money and that’s all there is to it.

In contrast, a reseller might pay $100 per month for the right to resell that same product. That doesn’t sound too good at first, right? But consider that the reseller can make 100% of the sale, on every sale. They become a reseller with that in mind: They earn $20 for every sale. It’s all profit.

Which is better, affiliate marketing or being a product reseller? Just do the math using the scenario above. If you make 5 sales as an affiliate you will make $50. But as a reseller, you’d lose $50. That doesn’t sound too good at all.

But wait, let’s imagine 10 sales. The affiliate marketer would generate $100 but the reseller would earn $100 too. That’s not too bad. It gets better with more sales.

How much better?

Let’s really show where reselling opportunities make sense. If there are 20 sales, an affiliate would generate $200. However, the reseller would generate $350.

Affiliates always get a cut so they do well with low sales. But, resellers do much better as sales increase. They’re pulling down 100% of the profit and it doesn’t too long to break even and do substantially better than affiliate marketers.

Don’t get me wrong. Affiliate marketing is fantastic but many internet marketers are making a bundle by being resellers. I hope you see why becoming a reseller can be very rewarding.

How to Survive a Financial Crisis

If you want to know how to survive a financial crisis then you’ve come to the right place. Before I give you the secret I want to share a story with you.

This morning I went to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. Of course I only saw the dentist for a few minutes. The rest of my time was spent with Gerry, the hygienist. She’s a great woman and loves to talk.

Before I knew it, we were talking to about the financial crisis and she was asking me how to get through it. I started talking about index funds, balancing your portfolio, regression to the mean, no load mutual funds, FDIC, and more. Then there was a deer-in-headlights look and I felt bad. At that moment I realized that she was very afraid.

Then something amazing happened. She asked if I would look at all her investment portfolio; Gerry was heading to “her guy” later in the day so the documentation was out in her car. She literally ran to her car and grabbed her IRA and investment information for me to look at. (It’s true!)

In fact, when things are grim you are best positioned to strike out on your own. That point is worthy of it’s own blog posting but it’s true. You can take that to the bank.

Secondly, start your own business and focus on sales. Be sure that those sales translate to profits, not just pure revenue. Make money and grow.

Stick With What Works

Why should you stick with what works? What does that even mean?

We spend a good chunk of time explaining the importance of focus in our (free) 20-minute 10x Method video. The reason for spending so much time on focus is that most people struggle to stick to one thing.

Most folks are looking for fast and easy money.

But the truth is that making money usually takes a lot of time. So, when you find something that actually works, you need to stick to it.

Remember, most people aren’t making any money online. And, they don’t stick to one method of generating income — even when that method clearly works. Once again, this is because most folks think they should be pulling down more cash. (Read between the lines: Greed!)

The irony is that when you stick to one way of making money — once you know it works — you can pull down even more money. This is because of these three reasons:

It’s easier to retain customers (low cost)
You get more efficient with your tasks
You can leverage your products and skills

In a nutshell, it’s cheap to sell to existing customers compared to winning new customers. Furthermore, you get good at what you do. You might even become a guru, worth your weight in gold on some topic. And lastly, you can bundle products together if you stay focused in your domain. Interest in A.I.D.A.

Yesterday I talked about A.I.D.A. and attention. As reference, A.I.D.A. stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. It’s a way of understanding a simple marketing model. In this blog posting I’ll focus on interest. The A.I.D.A. will make more sense as I push forward.

So, what is interest? What does it mean from a marketing point of view? I’ll answer those questions but first let me make an important point.

In reference to A.I.D.A. please remember that “interest” comes after attention. I will assume that we’ve already grabbed the attention of our reader or customer.

Recall that grabbing attention is critical but attention is easily broken. People don’t focus very well. Even small distractions break attention. To make matters worse, if you try too hard to grab someone’s attention you will turn them off.

In the previous posting on attention I provided you with some power words. Well, if you try too hard you’ll lose people quickly. It’s that simple. You have to strike a balance.

So, “interest” in A.I.D.A. is really about holding interesting or holding someone’s attention. It’s isn’t the initial act of capturing someone with sexy images and power words. That’s already done. You need to know how to keep people interested.

Let’s explore that for a moment. If you want to keep people interested you need to give them a good reason to stick with you and stay focused. You also need to occasionally boost their attention. This is why subheadlines work so well — you’re giving someone reasons to stick with you as they read down a page. Makes sense, right?

There are other tricks to hold attention. For example, you can use psychological devices. That is, you can get the person invested in the page in several ways. You can use their name (if you have it). You can also add mini-surveys to a page, with radio buttons and checkboxes.

Think of attention this way. If you can get the person to interact with your web page, chances of keeping their attention is much higher. Don’t just hit people with images and great information — get them engaged.

This excitement drives interest. It can also boost attention if it’s starting to fade. But remember, don’t bombard a person with great stuff. Mix it up with boring but high value content, such as charts, images, statistics, and the like. Give people shortcuts along the way.

So, I’ve summarized the key ideas behind “interest” in the A.I.D.A. model. You should understand what it means but you should also feel pretty good about some of the new techniques you can use to improve your salescopy.

Attention in A.I.D.A.

Many copywriters like to talk about A.I.D.A. (or AIDA) which stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. Give me just a couple of minutes to clearly explain the importance of attention in this formula.

STOP!

Asusming you made it past my first paragraph, I’m pretty sure the the word “STOP!” above caught your attention. It’s an attention-grabbing word.

But, what does “attention” really mean? It’s kind of hard to understand in theory, but in practive it’s easy to grasp. Let’s poke at it because it’s important in internet marketing.

Psychology textbooks will tell you that attention is a cognitive process where you concentrate on one thing while excluding everything else. The key principle is that you focus; everything else is noise.

The problem with attention is that, while we know how to manipulate it and disrupt it, we don’t understand it well. We even know how to help people maintain attention but we can’t explain it every well. For example, is it possible to pay attention to two things or not? The research isn’t conclusive.

Fortunately, we can ignore theory. What matters is what we can do in practice. What matters is that we can use attention to help customers solve problems and help businesses make money.

WARNING!

Once again I’ve grabbed your attention, right? Good copywriters know how to grab your attention. In most cases this is done with words. Yes, you can grab attention with images and sounds, but I’m going to ignore that for now. Let’s just keep it simple and take a look at 12 power words:

* Free
* Bonus
* Discount
* Famous
* Gift
* Best
* Instant
* Lucky
* New
* Secret
* Rare
* Secure

Note: Copywriters use a few hundred power words. This is a small list to get you thinking. Don’t limit yourself.

So, these power words are powerful exactly because they grab your attention. Obvioiusly you cannot use the A.I.D.A. model unless you first grab attention.

So, why not use power words again and again? It’s a smart question.

The reason is that if you use too many power words you ruin the salescopy. It’s like using too much garlic in your pasta sauce. Too much of a good thing ruins the batch.

The reason is that humans become “immune” to power words in a very short time. Attention can be grabbed using power words but you cannot maintain attention with power words alone. You need other tools for that.

The second part of A.I.D.A. is interest, which I’ll talk about in a future posting. For now, just recognize that there is real value in understanding power words to capture attention. And, you cannot use the A.I.D.A. model unless you grasp attention.

Just a couple of days ago I went looking for all of Kevin’s information products and reports. I could only find a few with each search that I did. So, I decided to create a list of every single product from Kevin Riley and post it here for you.

I’ve also added a rating next to each product based on my own experience. I haven’t bought all of his stuff, so I’ll just say “N/A” next to those. I’m sure they’re fine, but I can’t give you my recommendation.

As you can see from my ratings, most of Riley’s products are excellent. All of them are at least “good” and there’s real value. He doesn’t pump out fluff reports.

How to Run a Garage Sale

In this article I’m going to give you some great tips on how to run a garage sale. In addition to these garage sale tips, I’m going to give you some general marketing advice. Let’s get started…

1. Be sure to give every single item a price. Don’t make people guess. Add some certainty. Make sure your labels are easy to read; small writing isn’t allowed.

2. Use tables. Lot’s and lot’s of tables. This keeps your stuff off the floor. This makes at-a-glance shopping much easier. People don’t like to lean or bend down, especially older shoppers. Plus, stuff on the floor gets kicked and broken.

3. Lay books and magazines flat. (Another reason for using tables.) People like to see covers not just the spines of books. This same lesson applies to CDs and DVDs. You use up real estate but your sales will be 2-3 times as high.

4. Cluster similar things together. Reel people into a book or CD section for example. Make it easy to browse your stuff.

5. My biggest tip is that you should sell food and drinks. This can be very simple. Buy a case of bottled water and 2-3 dozen donuts. You’ll sell a ton. Get creative about the food you sell; this works like magic.

6. Be sure to say “Hello!” to every single person. Make eye contact and smile. This will drive up your sales. Human contact pulls people in and makes them more likely to purchase.

OK, now I’m going to give you three internet marketing lessons. You can learn a lot about online marketing when you look at how to run a garage sale.

1. You have to know WHY you are having a garage sale. Are you selling to make money or are you really selling to reduce your inventory. This is important with online selling too — what is your real goal? Are you trying to build up a customer list or make a ton of money right now? Low priced items will help you build a list fast than high priced items, for example.

2. You need to know your audience. People at garage sales are looking for great deals. They are also open to haggling for lower prices or volume discounts. Online you can do the same thing. “If you buy this product, I’ll give you this one for nothing.” Think about bonuses that compliment your main product. Be smart about grouping items together for maximum value.

3. Make it easy to buy. I gave a couple of examples above about grouping items together, making it easy to find prices, and laying items flat for easy viewing. The same concepts holds online. Use images smartly. Use headers and subheaders to group content together. Use boldface to highlight key ideas and concepts.

What is PDF Rebranding?

PDF rebranding is pretty simple to understand if you’re given an example to follow. I’ll do that in just a minute. First, let me explain a couple of key concepts then I’ll show you exactly how it’s done.

PDF rebranding is used by internet marketers to create viral marketing campaigns. The central idea is that someone gives away (or sells) a rebrandable PDF report which can be updated or “tagged” with an affiliate ID. Then, that rebranded report is given away or sold in an attempt to get affiliate sales.

Why Does This Work?

The product owner wins by getting people very excited by the opportunity to give away a product and make sales. The product owner will have his rebranded reports all over the place, all with links back to his main product page or membership site.

The affiliate giving away the rebranded report wins because he’s got a very nice sales tool (free rebranded report). This makes his life much easier. He just hands out the rebranded PDF like candy to his blog readers and folks on his list.

In this way, the product owner and affiliate work together to make the product go viral. That simply means that the PDFs will start showing up all over the place. Of course this doesn’t always happen since the PDFs might be buried or hidden, with people only coming from links in mailing lists.
